MANILA, Philippines—When tropical storm “Ondoy” (international name Ketsana) came in September 2009, it killed close to 500 people, rendered thousands of families homeless and destroyed infrastructure and crops worth over P10 billion.
(Acceptance speech delivered by Ramon del Rosario when he received the “MAP Management Man of the Year 2010” Award from the Management Association of The Philippines.)
This is an incredible honor you have bestowed on me today, and I truly appreciate it. The award is defined and greatly enhanced by its excellent roster of past recipients.
2010 was a year of partnerships – establishing new contacts and reviving the old ones. We sought to revive the energy and volunteer enthusiasm of the good old days when our Brain Gain Network (BGN) was just starting out in the early 90’s. This past year, very interesting seminars were organized for visiting scientists, technologists and engineers, mostly from American academic and R&D institutions.
The Congressional Commission on Science and Technology and Engineering (COMSTE) identified the priority projects of the commission for 2011 in an en banc meeting held at the Senate today.
Senator Edgardo J. Angara, Chair of COMSTE, enumerated the flagship projects of the commission, which are Telehealth for remote areas and Digital Medical Records, Remote-Sensing for Agriculture, Electronic Vehicles and Green Transport and Disaster Science, Biotechnology for Health and food security, and Renewable Energy Systems.
Senator Edgardo J. Angara identified Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs) as a key component in driving the local solar industry.
Angara, Chair of the Congressional Commission on Science Technology and Engineering (COMSTE), noted the recent news that Belgian firm Enfinity announced applications for 15 Renewable energy (RE) projects, valued at $1 billion.
After 15 years competing in the global software industry, Alvin Gendrano is in the Philippines to share his time, passion and experiences to help foster Philippine development. Dear Friends of the Brain Gain Network,
Tomorrow’s talk (dated November 26) by Alvin Gendrano (Microsoft US) on Cloud Computing Trends: Opportunities for Philippine Research, Startups and Businesses in De La Salle University from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon has been moved to December.
We are sorry for this late advisory. We shall inform you of the new date as soon as we receive final details from Mr. Gendrano and the organizers from De La Salle. Thank you.
Senator Edgardo J. Angara said that the government needs to make a push towards funding programs that would create more Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) holders in science and engineering in order to help make the Philippines more globally competitive.
Angara, Chair of the Congressional Commission on Science Technology and Engineering (COMSTE), said that a report by the commission listed the lack of high level S&T and engineering degree holders as one of the foremost reasons why the country is lagging behind in terms of S&T development.
I would like to congratulate Philippine Export Zone Authority (PEZA) Director General Lilia B. de Lima for being conferred the Management Association of the Philippines’ (MAP) “Man of the Year” Award for 2010.
Ma'am DG, as we call her, is the best example of a selfless, hardworking and competent government official. May we have more public servants like her. She truly deserves this award and we join all in the Brain Gain Network in congratulating her.
