The Philippines jumped to No. 75 in the latest Global Competitiveness Index ranking released today by the World Economic Forum (WEF).The country ranked No. 85 out of 139 economies in the world in 2010 and moved up to No. 75 out of 142 economies in 2011. This jump is one of the highest recorded worldwide for this year by the WEF and is the highest on record for the Philippines since its entry into the global competitiveness rankings in 1994.

Province of Laguna with support from Ionics EMS is pushing for an electronic tablet to be used as an educational tool for the 84 public high schools in the province of Laguna. It is envisioned to serve as a replacement for textbooks, workbooks and cost below $200 or PHP8,600 per unit. Target is below $100.

The provincial government of Laguna has built a tablet PCfrom scratch that it envisions to distribute to public high school students in the province in lieu of books. Called the eRizal tablet, the device was given to President Aquino by Laguna Governor Jeorge E.R. Ejercito Estregan last June 19 during the grand Rizal celebration in Calamba City.

This July 27-30, 2011 the Science and Technology Advisory Council of Silicon Valley (STAC-SV) will be conducting its ON3 National Competition during the National Science and Technology Week (NSTW).

The finals will feature start-ups which won the ON3 Visayas-Mindanao and NCR-Luzon legs held last February-March and May 2011 respectively. These start-ups will vie to be the top three finalists going on an all-expense paid, three-month immersion in Silicon Valley sponsored by the Department of Science & Technology (DOST).
