According to Synovate’s business consulting head for the Philippines, and Singapore group director, Anand Kumar, the Philippines needs to immediately seize this opportunity.
The Philippine government, he said, must come up with more incentives for setting up manufacturing hubs. It must also address its steep electricity rates to lure more foreign direct investment (FDI).

The Gearing Up Internet Literacy and Access for Students (GILAS) was turned over by the private sector to the Department of Education (DepEd) with a milestone of connecting 3,306 public high schools around the country. Representatives from the 24 member organizations of the GILAS consortium, led by steering committee co-chairman Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala, turned over the program’s final accomplishment report to DepEd Secretary Armin Luistro at Dusit Thani in Makati City.
GILAS is a multi-sectoral initiative composed mainly of corporations and concerned non-profit institutions, including the Brain Gain Network, realizing the need to invest in bridging the digital divide among the nation's public high school students. After more than six years of collaborative effort, GILAS has provided computer laboratories with Internet access to about 4.4 million students, and trained more than 13,500 teachers in Internet-assisted instruction, and 542 school heads and their assistants on ICT leadership. Fifty cities and 16 provinces now have full Internet connectivity.
As far as emerging markets go, the Philippines is seldom the choice investment destination, but one analyst says the Southeast Asian nation could well become the “dark horse” of the region, thanks to its favorable demographics and sound economic fundamentals.
The Philippine’s “very robust and young population" presents a ready pool of talent, says Mark Matthews, Head of Research Asia at Bank Julius Baer. He expects the country’s population of 93 million, around half of whom are below 20 years old, to more than double to 190 million by 2040.
And with a debt-to-GDP ratio among the lowest in Asia at under 50 percent, the Philippines is one of the most under-geared countries in the world, which makes it a less risky bet for investors. "That means it will no longer be 'another domino' in times of crisis," the Bank Julius Baer noted.
A survey conducted by software giant Microsoft has found that Filipino families have more than 10 gadgets, the highest among the countries covered by the poll which included China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
