Carnegie Mellon Professor Randy Pausch (Oct. 23, 1960 - July 25, 2008) gave his last lecture at the university Sept. 18, 2007, before a packed McConomy Auditorium. In his moving presentation, "Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams," Pausch talked about his lessons learned and gave advice to students on how to achieve their own career and personal goals. Speakers included our very own Brain Gain Network mover Paco Sandejas (Why Homebound, not Outbound?), Major Dennis Eclarin from the Philippine Army (Renegade, not Robots?), Akbayan Representative Risa Hontiveros-Baraquel (Why Not A Nation of Activists and an Activist State?), and the Benigno S. Aquino Foundation's executive director and nephew of the late and former President Corazon Aquino, Rapa Lopa (Is the Filipino Worth Living and Dying For?).

Noted journalist Howie Severino was also present and served as reactor. Howie summarized key points of each speaker's presentation and mirrored it with his own experiences and decisions.

 

Fr. Jomar Legaspi, Founder and President of Learn.Ph, outlines the challenges facing our outdated educational methodologies, likening the current system to obsolete factories of the industrial age. He then proposes a paradigm shift – an educational revolution harnessing the power of technology and creativity – in order for Filipinos to be competitive in the 21st Century.

Former Education undersecretary and IRRI President Mike Luz tackles issues plaguing Philippine Education, as a response to the question “Why Are We Not Yearning for Learning?” Using clear data and analysis, Mike looks at the future, marries it with the current reality, and proposes a way forward for the field.

Marketing Guru and President of U-Mak Tommy Lopez talks about the necessary revolution for Filipinos to compete on a global stage. His thesis is that the best Filipino product – is the Filipino himself/herself, as a globally competitive resource. This then dovetails on his experience on turning around the University of Makati in order to unleash the power of human capital.

In this inspiring talk, former Congressman Neric Acosta ponders how our country can achieve true progress. He proposes that even before we focus on policies, issues, the ‘what to do and what not to do’, we should first reflect and rethink who we are. For Neric, the question that will ultimately determine our country’s future is “Why Not Reimagine the Filipino?”
