Sustainable scholarships - a new approach from the UP College of Engineering

The 100 UPCOE Centennial Scholarships,  PayENG’G Forward, will be given to deserving students with an average that is equal to or better than 2.5.  It is a long-term loan (minimum of P360,000), at no interest,  that hopes to encourage scholarship beneficiaries to sponsor their respective scholars in the future.  Loan payment should be the equivalent amount  at the time of the scholarship.  Scholars will then have to attend a seminar that will discuss the concept of “loan.”

PayENG’G Forward will be implemented from 2010-2012 and would need P36 million to finance 100 scholars.  UP Alumni Engineers Michael Gonzalez (CE ’85) and Hadrian Aquino (CoE ’06) have pledged to support one scholar each.

Hi Aurora!

Having done fund raising in Ateneo a few years back, the approach of encouraging fellow scholars to pay it forward to the institutions works. Do you have a UP scholars association where you have a database of past scholars who can help champion your program?

Our fund raising unit in Ateneo back then was helping existing organizations raise resources for their beneficiaries. Similar to PayENG'G we have the Ateneo Alumni Scholars Association. They embarked on on telethon, wherein student scholars themselves got in touch with alumni scholars encouraging them to support those like them through a concept of small yet regular giving.

The small, regular giving scheme allows more people to participate especially the new graduates or yuppies.

Great idea Nicole - thanks for the tip! I will mention this to the Dean and see if she can rally the old scholars to help.

You ladies should befriend Lorraine Puyat who works or worked in the Stanford Development Office. She is an expert in Alumni relations and fund-raising as well. She is in this network.
