From BWorld Online:  Pinoy Teens top Asian Peers in terms of Internet Use

My comment: the article below from BusinessWorld states that we use the internet more but I worry that we use it to "waste too much time" on social networks, online games, youtube.  How can we as tech innovators convert this energy and time resource into productive output?

YOUNG PINOYS outrank their Asian peers when it comes to the recreational use of the Internet, a survey by market research firm Synovate found.

From social networking to gaming and watching Web videos, a larger share of Filipinos between eight and 24 years old go online for these activities versus counterparts in ten other Asian economies.

Eighty percent of the 874 youth in Metro Manila surveyed in the second quarter said they were registered on social networking sites.

This topped the regional average of 51% and was the highest among the 10 other economies covered by the poll: China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

Respondents also said they couldn’t live without television (30%) or their mobile phones (26%), with the Internet garnering just 18% of the replies.

The survey further found that one in three Filipino youngsters maintained a blog while 28% said they participated in online fora.

The Philippines was also deemed "the top market in Asia engaged in online gaming" with this activity ranking first among 60% of the young Filipinos’ Internet priorities.

The group also outclassed their peers when it came to the use of online videos and photos.

More than half (53%) of the Filipino sample said they watch videos online while one in three had uploaded photos to the Web, the highest percentages compared to other youth in Asia.

They are also the top group in tagging online photos, with 23% saying they’ve done this in the past seven days from when the survey was conducted. -- Jessica Anne D. Hermosa

From sharing this on FBook, my friends responded with the following:

  • Albert Jose De Vera Build The Matrix and harness their electrical energy. ;-). Seriously though, tech companies in the Philippines should look at their student on-the-job training programs and see if they can be enhanced to give more interesting activities from which they can learn how to be more creative in tech. It will require some more resources but it may be worth a try. Think Google Summer of Code.

  • Vince Daria build a facebook ap that functions as an online forum where people get together once a week (or every two weeks) and discuss certain issues or listen to an online presentation. the interface will look like a round table discussion (like a poker table) where people can sit and be part of the forum.

    Paco,

Define or at least propose (say 10 items) what qualifies as "Productive Output".

I take a gander at a few items (taking some things into consideration I know and stretching / proposing some controversial items):
    ...
    1) Increase Philippines rice output / production by 3-5% per year, over the next 10 years (or X amount of bushels or its equivalent).

    2) Increase Philippines fish farming production WITHOUT decreasing and over fishing the existing wild / ocean fishery by the expected population growth over the next 10 years....

    3) Lobby and get built in the Philippines a Nuclear Power plant within 15 years.... Preferably, two plants geographically separated such that they MUST serve / distribute the power output to different regions; say 1 in Metro Manila region and 1 in Cebu or Inopacan.

    4) Build within the next 12 years a high or at least rapid speed rail system (all electric) running North-South from Luzon (say Laoag City) through Legazpi with coordinated ferry (freight and people) to Samar Island (say Lavezares) with continuation of the rail to the far south of Leyte with additional coordinated ferry service to Surigao City and then the same rail service to General Santos City and/or (and better) Zamboanga City.

    5) Create a coordinated power grid along the same corridor as the rail system….

    6) Plan out, maybe, a tunnel (Chunnel like) along the rail rout over the next 40 years (yes, a complete generation). This would be (my view) a significant cultural impact to the country.

    7) Others???

Granted this does not necessarily involve using the current “internet” connections beyond the ability it provides to communicate clearly and quickly details necessary for better (i.e. good to excellent) decisions to the entire populace.

    Regards,

    -Fred
